Framed Ink

12 February 2013 - 10:58 AM

Has anyone read this book? I just finished it and...

*brain explodes*

Seriously, a must-read for every visual storyteller. I've long had issues with how modern (mainstream) comics are laid out (often going for "splashy" at the expense of "coherent") and this book perfectly articulates how to cohesively tie together composition with page layout with emotion.

Wow. Just... wow. What a book.

Rocketpig Art Dump

I'm working toward starting production on a new comic soon but before I start drawing, I decided I needed to take a few weeks to brush up on anatomy, color, etc. This is what I've been churning out over the past week or so (and plan to keep doing this work for a few more days). Crits are welcome, though these pieces are really just concept drawings, testing out the style I plan to use for the new comic. If you have any opinions, please share! Thanks!

Need opinion on coloring styles

18 January 2013 - 08:16 AM

I'm working on a new comic and I'm taking a different approach to the coloring process. I started playing around with Corel Painter and really liked the loose, emotive look the oil paints gave to each piece. But now I'm torn on style and process... Could I get some opinions on the coloring techniques here?

First sample: Flats in Photoshop, quick and dirty pass through Painter. It creates a vivid look but feels slightly flat (very little in the way of shadows/highlights.

Second sample: After a pass through Painter, I put the piece back into Photoshop and added a little more refinement. It gives the piece more of a focal point but loses a lot of the emotive qualities of the first piece. Thoughts? Which version do you prefer and why? Thanks!

Rocketpig art thread

At the suggestion of David, I'm posting up an early rendering of Spider-Woman. Fire away! Obviously, this is really early in the going. Looking for anatomical tips.

White Phoenix

07 June 2012 - 05:43 AM

I've decided to take a bit of time away from the comic because I haven't been happy with aspects of my art. My anatomy, particularly that of women, has been getting increasingly wonky over time. So I delved back into some anatomy books and decided to start doing random pin-up images to work out some of my issues. I've been trying to reference as much life as possible and as few comics as possible. I want my women to be muscular but still feminine and comic book-y. Not as exaggerated as most artists but still idealized a bit. I've been using extensive photo references to make sure I get some of the details correct and I think the improvement has been almost immediately recognizable. Here's the second piece I've done of Jean Grey in her white Phoenix attire. Next up, either Spider Woman or Black Widow. Prolly Spider Woman, I don't think I've ever drawn her before.
