Im about to book a hotel for my trip to New York including Comic con, im thinking of the Howard Johnson Inn Queens which i hope is a reasonable 2 star hotel not too far from Cc in the Javitts center, anyone been? also im thinking of a 3 day ticket, Friday-sunday will i miss much on the Thursday? The trip is as much for tourism as comics, any tourist advice is welcome as well...

Also, if any outcasters are going, let me know, we can meet and say hello...

if i still lived in NY i'd meet up with you! i used to live in Flushing.
  • CABS = cost more than subways, more direct route.
  • SUBWAY = cheaper than cabs, less direct ( you may have to walk several blocks when you exit) IMO, i enjoy the subway. if you decided to take the subway, get a metro card!!! Metro cards make things easier and faster.
general advice
  • give tips to cab drivers and waiters
  • we're not all shady, but if you have to ask for directions, ask a store owner or someone that looks like they live/work in the area.
  • i always keep my wallet in the front pocket.
  • its the summer, bring lots of bottle water. stay hydrated.
  • i know i live in the midwest now, but i'm biased to a nice, folded, NYC pizza.
  • have cash on hand, just in case. strangely enough, some places don't take credit card.
  • waiting for a subway sucks, bring an ipod.
  • Comic Com, just one backpack. i'd try not to bring lots of bags. stay mobile.
places of interest (if you have time)
  • "Top of the Rock", Rockefeller Center. best view of the city.
  • "Jekyll & Hyde", restaurant. the one in midtown by central park, not the one in SoHo.
  • "Grand central Station", this will actually require you to leave the subway and loose that riding fare. you'd have to pay again to get back on the subway.

i can't think of anything else yet.

I don't think you will miss much on Thursday. Usually this is the day the Pros hang out in the bar of the hotel and see and meet each other. From what I have heard unless you really are dug in with them they are pretty tight circles and you won't really get close to anyone. I have hear entirely too many negative stories about Premier Night to actually go even as an exhibitor. Even the semi pros have relayed stories. I don't think it has to do with anyone being jerks but the first night of a long weekend and usually the only one everyone isn't backlogged on commissions et cetera, and then add in seeing old friends they may not have seen in a year or so.

Smaller shows in smaller places this could be a good place to pow wow with the Pros if they did such a thing, but at the bigger shows I think they get overwhelmed by everyone. The bar gets ridiculously crowded on top of it.

I'm hoping to head there this year for the first time as well. Been to SDCC a bunch but never NYCC.

Definitely. I'm waiting for them to open professional registration. That's how I'm going to try to get in. I'm not sure how stringent their standards are but I've gotten into SDCC with pro status.

Enjoy yourself. NYC is the best city in the world. (I am biased I grew up here). Keep in mind; Crime is at a low (despise what the news says) but always be aware of people around you. Try to blend in. (Do not stand on the corner of any Manhattan street staring up at the buildings, nothing worst than advertising you are not from around here). If you see a $hit load of cops running somewhere GO the other way. Enjoy the Con. I'll have a table there in the small print area stop by.
