This Month's Challenge:

Create your own Jedi or Sith based on a species of aliens from the Star Wars universe! Hope you don't mind Fedora,I'm going to step in slighlty and add the stipulation No Humans! With such a wide variety of characters it'd be a shame to take the easy route. There's plenty reference out there so go nuts. Any medium you want.

Voting will close in one week from the day of this post -- Friday March 30, 2012.

May the Force Be With You!

Fedora The Explorer created a Bio for his entry to this melee. This was not a requirement of the challenge, but he did take the time to make it. I've included it here for you to read. (This is for the Sith Ewok character he created -- 2 images up from this line).

Yub-Cha was a loner in his tribe, though being very talented at hand to hand combat and a very skilled linguist, he did not feel like he fit on Endor. He was excluded from most of the tribal ceremonies for the Elders feared his anger. One day a human came, in a dark cloak and took Yub-Cha away to be his apprentice. At the time no one knew what had happened until years later when he returned, carrying two lightsabers, a double-sided and one with his old spearhead attached to the hilt. Yub-Cha had become Darth Furya, the most feared Ewok in the history of the Empire. Furya massacred his tribe in a bitter rage. When he returned to Coruscant, his teacher and mentor, Darth Sidious had taken on another pupil, Darth Maul. Furya was outraged, Sidious reasoned with him of course and Furya helped his master train Maul, who upon completing his training, as a sign of respect to Furya carries with him, at all times a double sided lightsaber with which he killed the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Darth Furya left Sidious on Coruscant searching for others to train in the ways of the Sith. He created a temple of sorts on a remote planet and trained many Siths. He is said to still be there, training and becoming one with the dark side. No one has seen him in over a century, his legend still lives on to this day.

Nice work guys,
When I saw this assignment my first thought was of a ewok, too.
All pics here are interesting,
I'm not a big starwars fan, so I have no idea what all characters are,
Leadfanatic 's character looks interesting, like the way how the character poses, image is nice as a whole because of the colors etc.
Nate's ewok is kinda what I had in mind myself for this competition, like how he looks all evil and just plain awesome with that skull on his shoulder. Couldve done with a background though, but still got my vote.
David Skeleton's piece is just pure awesome, love the inks, dont know what kinda monster it is, but thats an awesome image right there.
Fedora's piece I especially like the lightsaber with the stoneage/primitive stone arrowhead on the other side. Very original. Legs seem kinda long for an ewok, but other wise a very nice image, looks very badass :)
Ragnaroker too did a superb job with inks, love how you toned the muscles with just shadow effect in his fur. Very skillfully done.

Too bad i can only cast one vote!

Goodluck everyone!

Mister Skeleton gets my vote. Great background, excellently washed out monotone color as if a killer sandstorm is sweeping across that desert world.

L34D did a great job giving his character a fine setting with lovely colors and nice lighting effects.

Nate, I love the texture of your Ewok as his fur is stand out and the intensity of the expression he has is clear, but there's no background, not even a hint of floor for him to stand on. He looks like he's floating (using the force to do so, maybe?).

Fedora, good colors and pose for your Ewok warrior, but my only problem with your piece is that he seems a bit insubstantial--he could use some thick texture tufts to add the weight that would make him feel more solid and less fluffy (a problem all Ewoks suffer from, I hear). :)

As for myself, I procrastinated on this one and didn't really get started until 10pm last night, so no colors and that pretty much equals fail.

For reference, mine was done using pencil for 15 minutes to layout a very basic Wookie body and a pen brush was used to portray the vast majority of the fur. One other pen was used to do the details of the face.

Great entries guys! Good to see such a turn out on this.

L34D - Good choice of alien, not familiar with the species and its great to see a wide variety. The style of the colour really rocks, looks nice and organic with great light effects. Really like the weapon design.

Myself - yeah, it needs a background! Or at least something to stand on, some bones and bodies perhaps. I approached it more as a character design exercise and overlooked that point. Happy with how my colour turned out. I'm working on colouring my lines and knowing when to leave them black, had a hard time getting it right but this is the closest I've got and think it adds to the picture. Picked up a few things that will hopefully make future work stronger.

David - This is my favorite. Great choice of alien and you really captured the horror of the dark side in a way I've not seen myself before, you've created a real threat. Nice light and shadows and glad you didn't put too much colour in there, really looks like a harsh stormy desert.

Fedora - Great minds think alike and fools seldom differ ;) I like it overall but I think your earlier draft was more promising. With your strong light sources some stronger shadows would have been nice and give your character more mass. Nicely drawn and great textures. The rock on the saber is a great touch.

Rocker - Graaaaaagghhhh (in my best wookie). Lovely texture and expression. Your technique gave him a really well defined body shape where it would have been easy to get lost in the fluff. A bit of a robe or toga would have added to the jedi character a bit. A very strong black and white image, colour is not necessarily better and I'm glad you left it this way and didn't rush some on to it.

Not one but TWO Sith Ewoks for the challenge! Incredible. Nice job on the challenge everyone - very interesting images and subject matter. Everyone really brought their "A-game" to the battle and I'm really going to have to study each one individually to learn something new about each process.

End of the day, my vote went to davidskeleton - the Tuskin Raider Siths are just beautifully rendered and scary as hell to look at. There's a lot of depth and atmosphere to the image as well, but its mostly how damned scary they look that drives the "Sith" home for me.

Still - every single person in the challenge did an amazing job and you should all be proud of your efforts.

You all did an excellent job. David nailed a new technique with that white shading that really added depth to the image. To me, the challenge was to create "your own" sith and while I know very little about Star Wars, I do know all of the character types presented here except the first one done by L34DF4N4T1C. Because of the originality and execution I went with this one.

Great job you guys.

Thanks everyone for the love here, I am glad I was able to bring it for you all. I didn't know that race either, but I haven't seen all the Star Wars movies, but I think I saw it on Wookipedia or someplace when this topic was posted.

I think the topic had to be an existing Star Wars race though so all of our characters are someplace in the vast amount of races that make up everywhere from Mos Eisley Cantina to Alderaan so we couldn't go too far out for 'originality,' as Scott suggested.

In fact I think it had to be in a galaxy far far away.. see what I did there? ;)

You so punny.

My understanding of the challenge was participants had to use races that existed within the Star Wars Universe as well.
