Hey guys,

I've been playing around with an idea for a comic in my head for a couple of years now for a superhero/steampunk/supernatural story, and I think the only way I'm ever going to get going with it is if I have someone else working with me, which will shame me into moving further with the project.

I'm looking for an artistic collaborator who can do some page layouts for me; As much as I enjoy drawing, getting dynamic poses and panel layouts has always really challenged me, and I'm hoping if I'm working with some one else doing some rough pencils, that will help me develop those skills.

Is anyone game?

I don't have any timetable for this, like I say it's just been bouncing around my head for a couple of years, and I feel I should let it out.

By the way, the story is called "Magpie"

Hey man,

This is an intriguing offer, since you are basically asking someone to do the fun part (in my opinion, anyway). I'm insanely overbooked at present, but as long as its just layouts, and not a massive rush, I could work this into my sketching activities. If you are interested, go ahead and message me with you email address and so forth.

That Just Happened! Glad to see this kind of thing happen, and I think you two will bring something very interesting to life with this collaboration. I am really excited to see where this goes.

Go seb go! Love me some superhero/steampunk/supernatural cross overs. During one of my creative brain farts i wrote all sorts of concepts and ideas and one of them was super/steam/natural! So im very much looking forward to this. One day i'd love to do something like this but im way off. I agree Nick things like this are what this community is all about right? I'm sure all the Outcasts will give all support!

Sweeeeet! There's no rush at all... and now I'll have to get on and do it! I'll start forming the jumble of notes and sketches I have into some kind of script <shudder>

Thanks for the offer of support Rachael, I'll let you know how we get on!

If I might make a suggestion...make sure what you are looking for when you shop around your ideas in the hopes to collaborate on a project. Is this YOUR comic and you're just looking for some help, or is this a rough concept you'd like to develop in a partnership with another artist? Make sure the boundaries are well established from the get go.

If you are a writer with an idea and need an artist to develop the visual style of your world and characters that's more of a creative partnership and perhaps the artist could feel entitled to be considered a creator as well. If you have much of that legwork down and just need someone doing layouts, that's more of a hired gun relationship and perhaps more of a "this is my comic, my idea, and my story" and I just need some help with breakdowns.

I've seen this lack of defining roles lead to some awful fights that could have been avoided altogether if only some boundaries were established from the get go.

Just my 2 cents.

Those are some valuable two cents.. in my opinion. And some of these questions struck me in not only replying with interest of collaboration but also within the broad spectrum of interest this post generated, as an interested audience!

I agree. My intention here is to provide layouts as an exercise for myself, as well as assistance for Seb, but along the lines of a draw-over: he can use what he likes and discard the rest. As for ownership, its all Seb's. Honestly, I don't have the time to contribute to the level of deserving any stake.

Thanks guys.

I have been on both ends of this argument and can see each side of it. When I first started out I was asked to provide art/character design/etc. for a comic strip pitch and felt that as such I deserved partial rights to the property but the writer and originator of the concept felt otherwise. He was not clear with me on this at the onset and I was too green to ask or establish this either.

More recently I have been careful with utilizing some TOACM artwork from other creators into the TOACM strip itself. I wanted to find and artist to do a single panel in his art style which was something of a "flashback" scene. I was clear from the get go that the characters were all mine, and the character designs were done, I just needed the art in a style different from my own. The artist helping me out understood completely and all was well.
